Get Ready for Winter

A Friendly Guide to Efficient EV Charging This Season

As the crisp air rolls in and the nights grow longer, there’s plenty to love about winter—whether it’s sipping your favourite seasonal drink at one of our onsite amenities or enjoying the comfort of a preconditioned EV on a frosty morning.

But with the drop in temperature comes a noticeable shift in charging behaviour, and we’re here to help you stay ahead of it. From our operations team to you, here’s everything you need to know to keep your EV charging smoothly all season long.

Why Charging Slows Down in Winter—and What You Can Do

1. Cold Batteries = Slower Charging

When your EV battery is cold, your car automatically limits charging speeds to protect the battery. Even if you arrive with a low battery hoping for a rapid top-up, your vehicle may first need time to warm up the battery—by which point, you’ve already missed the window for peak charging speeds.

Tip: Precondition your battery before arriving at the charger. Most EVs allow you to do this via the app or onboard settings.

2. Long Drives Don’t Always Mean Warm Batteries

It’s easy to assume that a long drive warms up your battery, but EVs are so efficient that this isn’t always the case. Some models even show a snowflake icon to indicate a cold battery. Unlike petrol or diesel engines, EVs don’t generate much waste heat—so don’t rely on distance alone to prep your battery.

Tip: Use your vehicle’s battery temperature display (if available) to monitor readiness.

3. Use Your Sat Nav—Even If You Know the Way

Many EVs use navigation data to prepare the battery for fast charging. By entering the charging station into your sat nav, your car may begin warming the battery en route, helping you achieve better speeds when you arrive.

Tip: Always set your destination—even if you’re a regular visitor.

4. Charger Faults Are Rare, But We’re Watching

While most slow charging issues are temperature-related, occasional hardware faults can affect performance. The good news? Our team monitors error messages daily and proactively opens tickets to resolve issues fast.

Tip: If something feels off and you’ve ruled out the basics, contact us via the contact form. We’ll review your session data and help pinpoint the cause.

5. Load Management Is Unlikely to Affect You

To keep prices low, we use load management at some sites. This helps us balance power capacity and cost—think of it like a standing charge at home but scaled up. In reality, it only kicks in under extreme conditions (like a fleet of empty electric trucks charging simultaneously).

Tip: If you’re aiming for top speeds, choose an unoccupied bay on a high-power charger (e.g., 300kW), as power is shared between bays.

Winter Charging Tips at a Glance

  • Precondition your battery before arriving.
  • Arrive with a lower battery level to maximise charging speed.
  • Use your sat nav to help your car prep for charging.
  • Reach out if you notice unusual charging behaviour—we’re here to help.
