What is Deutschlandnetz?
Deutschlandnetz is a federal government programme to build Germany's nationwide high-power charging (HPC) backbone for electric vehicles. Mandated by the Fast Charging Act (Schnellladegesetz, SchnellLG), the Federal Ministry of Transport (BMV) has contracted private operators to build and run more than 1,000 fast-charging locations with around 9,000 HPC charging points by the end of 2026. The programme is coordinated by the National Centre for Charging Infrastructure (Nationale Leitstelle Ladeinfrastruktur, NLL), which is part of NOW GmbH. The total federal investment is approximately €2.3 billion.
Why was Deutschlandnetz created?
Even as the private charging market grew, certain locations — particularly rural communities, smaller towns, and unmanaged motorway rest areas — remained 'white spots' on the public charging map. Deutschlandnetz was specifically designed to close these gaps. Its goal is to ensure that every driver in Germany can reach an HPC charger within just a few minutes, regardless of where they live or travel. The programme deliberately complements, rather than competes with, privately funded charging networks.
How large is Deutschlandnetz, and where are the sites located?
The programme covers 1,000+ locations in total: 900 regional sites spread across six regions of Germany (North-West, North-East, Central Germany, South-East, South-West, and West), and 200 motorway locations at unmanaged rest areas along the federal motorway network. Regional locations range in size from S (4 charge points) to M (8), L (12), and XL (16 charge points). Motorway locations have 4, 6, or 8 charge points each. An interactive map of all planned and operational sites is available at www.standorttool.de.
What technical standards must Deutschlandnetz chargers meet?
Every charging point in the Deutschlandnetz must be technically capable of delivering a maximum output of at least 300 kW, with a nominal charging capacity of at least 200 kW per point. Operators must guarantee high availability, barrier-free access (including extra-wide spaces for vehicles with trailers), 24/7 opening hours, and support for multiple payment methods — including standard charging cards, apps, and direct credit/debit card payment. All electricity supplied must come from 100% certified renewable energy sources
What is the current rollout status of the Deutschlandnetz?
The programme is accelerating sharply. The 100th regional site went live in October 2025, and new sites have been opening every week since. According to the official Deutschlandnetz website (March 2026), Germany now has 2.2 million registered battery electric cars and 195,000+ publicly accessible charging points — of which 49,000 are fast-chargers above 22 kW. The programme remains on track for its end-2026 completion target, with dozens of sites across all operators simultaneously in construction. EDRI's most recently confirmed opening was Bindlach near Bayreuth (April 2026).
How did EDRI come to be part of Deutschlandnetz?
In September 2023, the Federal Ministry of Transport (BMV) awarded the 23 regional Deutschlandnetz lots to ten operators after a competitive tendering process. E.ON Drive Infrastructure (EDRI) was selected as one of the two largest operators by contracted volume, securing multiple lots covering north-west and southern Germany. In February 2024, EDRI was also awarded lots in the motorway tender — one of four operators selected by Autobahn GmbH alongside three other CPOs. EDRI's selection reflects its proven track record as a pan-European charge point operator and the E.ON Group's deep expertise in energy infrastructure.
How many locations and charging points has EDRI been contracted to deliver?
EDRI has been awarded approximately 170 Deutschlandnetz locations at which it will install and operate more than 1,350 HPC charging points. Each charger is capable of delivering up to 400 kW — significantly above the programme minimum of 300 kW technical capability and 200 kW nominal output. This makes EDRI one of the single largest contributors to the Deutschlandnetz by both site count and total charging capacity.
Which regions of Germany is EDRI building in?
EDRI's contracted lots cover north-west Germany and southern Germany — spanning Lower Saxony, northern Germany, Bavaria, and Baden-Württemberg. Within each lot, EDRI identifies and secures specific site locations in the predefined federal search areas, working closely with location partners, municipalities, and landowners to find accessible, high-traffic spots such as retail parks, town-centre car parks, and roadside locations near major transport links.
How many EDRI Deutschlandnetz sites are operational today, and what is in the pipeline?
EDRI's Deutschlandnetz rollout is accelerating. The first two sites opened in February 2025 in Bad Königshofen and Rothenburg ob der Tauber (Bavaria). Further confirmed openings include Krumbach (Swabia, M-site, May 2025), Papenburg (Lower Saxony, L-site, August 2025), Schlüsselfeld, Hemmoor, and most recently Bindlach near Bayreuth (Upper Franconia, L-site, April 2026) — located directly adjacent to the A9/B2 interchange. Overall, 19 locations with 120 charging points are currently in operation within the regional lots. Along the motorways, EDRI already operates a total of 7 locations with 34 charging points. The pipeline behind these operational sites remains strong, with further locations actively in the construction phase as of April 2026.
What are EDRI's most notable Deutschlandnetz sites so far?
Three sites stand out in EDRI's Deutschlandnetz portfolio to date. Papenburg (Lower Saxony, L-site, August 2025) is EDRI's original flagship: 12 charge points under three purpose-designed roofs with integrated digital availability and price displays, on-site photovoltaic panels, barrier-free access including drive-through spaces, and proximity to the B70 north-south corridor near the Dutch border. Hemmoor introduced EDRI's T-Pole — a high-visibility mast combining LED lighting, wayfinding signage, and a real-time display of free charging points and the current ad-hoc kWh price before drivers even pull in. Bindlach (Upper Franconia, L-site, April 2026) is the most recent addition: 12 charge points at up to 400 kW, three designer roofs with 27 kWp of on-site solar, vending machines, self-cleaning toilet facilities, and an extra-long space (3×7 m) for commercial vehicles — all adjacent to the A9 motorway north of Bayreuth.
How do I find and use an EDRI Deutschlandnetz charging station?
You can locate all Deutschlandnetz sites — including EDRI's — using the interactive map at www.standorttool.de or through major EV navigation and charging apps. At the station, you can start a charge and pay using any standard RFID charging card, a charging app (including those of any major e-mobility service provider via roaming), or directly with a credit or debit card at the terminal on the charger. No prior registration or subscription is required for ad-hoc charging.
How fast can I charge at an EDRI Deutschlandnetz site?
EDRI's Deutschlandnetz chargers deliver up to 400 kW — one of the highest charging speeds available in Germany. Actual charge speed depends on your vehicle's onboard charger capability. Many modern long-range EVs can add enough range for the next 200+ km in approximately 20 minutes. All chargers meet the Deutschlandnetz minimum of at least 200 kW nominal output per point.
Is the electricity at EDRI's Deutschlandnetz sites green?
Yes. All electricity supplied at EDRI's Deutschlandnetz sites comes from 100% certified renewable energy. This is both a contractual requirement of the Deutschlandnetz programme and a core commitment of EDRI across its entire European network.
What amenities can I expect at an EDRI Deutschlandnetz charging hub?
EDRI designs its sites to make the charging stop as comfortable as possible. Larger L-sites such as Papenburg and Bindlach feature designer roofs with integrated digital displays showing live charging availability and the current kWh ad-hoc price, on-site photovoltaic panels, barrier-free parking including extra-long spaces for trailers, drive-through charging bays, vending machines, and toilet facilities. Sites are selected near amenities such as restaurants and supermarkets.
What connector types are available at EDRI Deutschlandnetz stations?
All Deutschlandnetz HPC chargers — including those operated by EDRI — use the CCS (Combined Charging System) standard. This is the prevailing DC fast-charging standard in Europe and is compatible with the vast majority of electric cars on the market today. Displays guide drivers through the charging and payment process in both German and English.
How does pricing work at a Deutschlandnetz site?
Pricing at Deutschlandnetz sites is per kWh and is displayed transparently before you start a session — on the EDRI T-Pole or roof signage, on the charger display, or via your charging app. If you charge via your e-mobility service provider or charging card, the price will reflect your subscription tariff. Ad-hoc charging (no registration required) is always available via credit or debit card directly at the charger.
Can business customers and fleet operators use EDRI Deutschlandnetz sites?
Yes. All Deutschlandnetz sites are publicly accessible to any user — private individuals, business travellers, and commercial fleets alike. Fleet managers can integrate EDRI sites into their charging networks via roaming agreements with their fleet mobility service provider. EDRI's German Deutschlandnetz future footprint of 170+ locations with over 1,350 HPC points is a significant asset for any fleet operating in Germany, alongside EDRI's broader European network of 9,000+ public charge points across 11 countries.
What regions of Germany do EDRI's Deutschlandnetz sites cover?
EDRI's contracted lots cover north-west and southern Germany. Confirmed operational sites span Bavaria (Bad Königshofen, Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Krumbach, Bindlach near Bayreuth), Lower Saxony (Papenburg, Hemmoor), and further locations including Schlüsselfeld — with additional sites actively under construction as of April 2026. The full 170-location footprint will cover both regions comprehensively by end-2026.
Can EDRI help us install charging infrastructure at our own depot or facility?
Yes. Beyond the Deutschlandnetz public network, EDRI also partners with businesses to deploy charging infrastructure at public parking spaces at or nearby company depots, retail destinations, hotels, and logistics sites. EDRI finances, installs, and operates the infrastructure, with location partners benefiting from increased visitor frequency and long-term lease income. Please contact EDRI via edri.com to explore a partnership.
What does the Deutschlandnetz mean for my municipality?
If your municipality falls within one of the 900 Deutschlandnetz search areas, a federally funded HPC fast-charging hub will be built in your community at no direct cost to the municipality. Search areas were determined using spatial, sociodemographic, and traffic data to identify where charging infrastructure is most needed. You can check whether your municipality lies within a search area at www.deutschlandnetz.de. For municipalities in EDRI's contracted lots (north-west and southern Germany), EDRI may contact you directly to discuss site selection and coordination.
What is expected of our municipality if EDRI approaches us?
If EDRI contacts your municipality as part of the Deutschlandnetz rollout, it is typically to explore potential site locations within the designated search area. Your municipality is encouraged to engage constructively — for example, by facilitating access to suitable public spaces or parking areas and by supporting any necessary planning or permitting steps. All construction and operating costs are borne by EDRI (supported by federal subsidies), not the municipality.
How does a Deutschlandnetz site benefit our community?
A Deutschlandnetz site brings several direct and indirect benefits: it enhances local mobility for residents who drive EVs or are considering switching; it increases footfall at nearby businesses; it signals to investors, residents, and visitors that the municipality is future-ready; and it contributes directly to Germany's climate targets. The federal government's Masterplan Ladeinfrastruktur 2030, adopted in November 2025, underlines that charging infrastructure is a key pillar of Germany's long-term mobility and climate strategy.
Will the charging station be barrier-free and accessible to all residents?
Yes. Deutschlandnetz specifications require all sites to include barrier-free access. EDRI's sites include extra-wide parking spaces and, at larger hubs, drive-through charging bays that eliminate the need to reverse — making them accessible for drivers towing caravans or trailers and for those with limited mobility.
What happens to the site after the Deutschlandnetz contract period ends?
EDRI builds and operates the charging infrastructure. As a pan-European CPO with a long-term infrastructure strategy, EDRI is committed to operating its sites well beyond the initial Deutschlandnetz contract period. The sites are designed as permanent infrastructure assets — not temporary installations — and will continue to serve the community and EV drivers for years to come.
Who are the key parties in the Deutschlandnetz, and what is EDRI's role?
The Deutschlandnetz was mandated by the German Fast Charging Act and is funded by the Federal Ministry of Transport (BMV). Toll Collect GmbH manages contracts for regional locations; Autobahn GmbH manages motorway lots. The National Centre for Charging Infrastructure (NLL / NOW GmbH) coordinates implementation and monitors sites. Ten operators were selected through competitive tender in September 2023 (regional) and February 2024 (motorway). E.ON Drive Infrastructure (EDRI) is one of the two largest operators by contracted volume, alongside TotalEnergies, having been awarded approximately 170 locations with more than 1,350 HPC points across north-west and southern Germany — with up to 400 kW per charger.
What are the key facts and figures about the Deutschlandnetz as of April 2026?
The programme will deliver the majority of the 9,000 HPC charge points at 1,000+ locations across Germany by end-2026, backed by approximately €2.3 billion in federal investment. New sites are opening every week across all operators. According to the official Deutschlandnetz website (March 2026), Germany has 2.2 million registered battery-electric cars and 3.3 million EVs in total (including plug-in hybrids), with over 195,000 publicly accessible charging points — of which 49,000 are fast-chargers above 22 kW. BDEW reports the public charging network surpassed 200,000 points overall in 2025, with installed capacity exceeding nine gigawatts. BEVs accounted for 22% of new car registrations in November 2025.
How does the Deutschlandnetz fit into Germany's broader EV charging strategy?
The Deutschlandnetz is the backbone of Germany's charging infrastructure strategy, designed to close geographic white spots and guarantee a minimum level of HPC coverage nationwide. It is complemented by the Masterplan Ladeinfrastruktur 2030, adopted by the federal cabinet in November 2025, which includes 41 measures to accelerate the broader charging infrastructure rollout. Analysts estimate Germany will need between 380,000 and 680,000 public charge points by 2030 — including 55,000 to 90,000 HPC points — underscoring that the Deutschlandnetz is a critical foundation, but private-sector investment at scale will also be essential.
What is EDRI's broader context as an operator?
E.ON Drive Infrastructure (EDRI) is a pan-European charge point operator, part of the E.ON Group, headquartered in Essen, Germany. As of 2026, EDRI operates more than 9,000 public EV charging points across 11 European countries including Germany, Sweden, Denmark, UK, Netherlands, Czechia, Romania, Austria, Poland, Italy and Hungary. EDRI's Deutschlandnetz commitment — 170+ locations and 1,350+ HPC points — makes it one of the programme's two largest contributors and a central pillar of Germany's fast-charging rollout. What is Autocharge and how is it different from Plug & Charge?
The process for the EV driver is identical for Plug&Charge and AutoCharge. The charging station automatically recognizes the car and starts the charging process. Authentication and payment are handled automatically. However, the way the charging station identifies the car is different. With Plug&Charge, your data security is ensured. Due to concerns about data security, several EV manufacturers long refused AutoCharge protocols.

Please check out our charge speed calculator for details.

What is the maximum cable length at your stations?
DC charger cables are typically 3–5 meters long. AC chargers require you to bring your own Type 2 cable.
Does the state of charge affect charging speed?
Yes. Charging is typically fastest between 20% and 80%. Above 80%, your car automatically reduces the charging rate to protect battery health and longevity.
Think of it like entering a highway during rush hour: When traffic is light (your battery is still relatively empty), you can merge quickly and accelerate easily — that's like charging between 20% and 80%. But as the highway fills up (your battery gets closer to 100%), it becomes harder to merge — you need to slow down, find the right gap, and ease in carefully. That’s why charging slows down after 80% — to keep things smooth, safe, and avoid "traffic jams" in your battery.
