As part of the federal Deutschlandnetz initiative led by the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport (BMV), E.ON has put six fast-charging stations into operation in Papenburg, Lower Saxony, each equipped with two charging points. Twelve electric vehicles can charge simultaneously with at least 200 kW and up to 400 kW of power. Modern electric cars can therefore be ready for the next stage of their journey in around 20 minutes.
The site is located in the parking area of the Möbel ALBERS furniture store, Deverweg 18 in Papenburg, close to the German-Dutch border. It benefits from convenient transport connections in immediate proximity to the B70, an important north–south route in the Emsland region. This excellent accessibility makes the site ideal for charging stops by tourists as well as local residents. Within walking distance are not only the furniture store, which offers publicly accessible sanitary facilities, but also numerous everyday amenities, including supermarkets, drugstores, and dining options. In addition, E.ON and Möbel ALBERS are planning three further fast-charging sites at the retailer’s branches in Meppen, Stralsund, and Greifswald.
Patrick Schnieder, Federal Minister for Digital and Transport: “With the new fast-charging site in Papenburg, we are strengthening charging infrastructure exactly where people live, work, and travel. This is another important building block of the Deutschlandnetz, through which we are creating 9,000 ultra-fast charging points nationwide – for convenient and reliable charging in cities, rural areas, and along motorways.”
Dagmar Fehler, CEO and Spokesperson of NOW GmbH: “Anyone traveling with an electric car wants to charge easily and quickly – that is exactly what the new Deutschlandnetz site in Papenburg enables. Easily accessible charging bays and numerous opportunities to make good use of the charging stop ensure that charging becomes a seamless part of everyday life. Together with the BMV and operator companies such as E.ON, we are working within the Deutschlandnetz to make electromobility even more practical for daily use.”
Modern Setup with Designer Canopies, Photovoltaic System, and User Guidance
Ludolf von Maltzan, Business Manager Germany at E.ON Drive Infrastructure: “At the new Deutschlandnetz site in Papenburg, three modern designer canopies are being used, combining functional and aesthetic aspects. They not only provide protection against the elements but also serve as an information system: an integrated digital display within the canopy shows available charging bays as well as the current kilowatt-hour price for ad-hoc charging.”
As at all E.ON Drive Infrastructure sites, customers in Papenburg charge using 100 percent electricity from renewable energy sources. To support sustainable operation, each of the three canopies is equipped with its own photovoltaic system with a nominal capacity of nine kWp per canopy. The electricity generated is used directly to support on-site charging operations.
Wide Parking Bays for Accessible Charging
Charging sessions can be started and paid for conveniently using common charging cards and charging apps, such as the E.ON Drive Comfort app, or via credit card terminal at the charging station.
The site in northwest Germany is implemented in the so-called L-setup of the Deutschlandnetz and offers a total of 12 charging bays with parking detection. The accessible design includes two extra-wide parking spaces. For commercial vehicles – such as electric vans or electric passenger cars with trailers – an extra-long charging bay (3 x 7 meters) is available. For added convenience, some charging bays are designed as drive-through solutions, eliminating the need for maneuvering.
More Than 170 E.ON Fast-Charging Sites for the Deutschlandnetz
Through the Deutschlandnetz, the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport, together with charging station operators, is creating 9,000 additional fast-charging points for electric cars at more than 1,000 locations. A total of approximately €2.3 billion is being invested in the construction and operation of these sites. They are being developed in rural regions, in cities, and at unmanaged motorway service areas. Additional E.ON sites for the expansion of the Deutschlandnetz are currently under construction.
