Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield and E.ON launch joint large-scale project to expand EV charging infrastructure at URW locations in Germany

Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield (URW) and E.ON announce the extensive expansion of EV charging infrastructure at the four retail and lifestyle destinations Westfield Hamburg-Überseequartier, Westfield Centro in Oberhausen, Westfield Ruhr Park in Bochum, and Paunsdorf Center in Leipzig. The partnership, which includes a total of more than 300 new DC charging points, aims to make sustainable mobility more accessible, attractive, and practical for visitors to the shopping centers.

As part of the project, the charging infrastructure at the four URW locations will be significantly expanded: With 308 new charging points, the existing offering will more than quadruple.

  • Westfield Centro, Oberhausen: 100 new fast-charging points
  • Westfield Hamburg-Überseequartier, Hamburg: 48 new fast-charging points
  • Westfield Ruhr Park, Bochum: 98 new fast-charging points
  • Paunsdorf Center, Leipzig: 62 new fast-charging points

At Westfield Hamburg-Überseequartier, URW and E.ON plan to commission the first charging stations by the end of 2026, while at Westfield Centro, Westfield Ruhr Park, and Paunsdorf Center this is planned from mid-2027.

To ensure that EV charging infrastructure and visitor patterns are aligned, the charging concepts at each location will be specifically tailored to the respective average dwell time. Both fast chargers with 50 kilowatts (kW) charging capacity and ultra-fast chargers with 200 kW and 400 kW will be used to optimally support both short stops and longer stays. Customers benefit from tangible synergies: reliable charging infrastructure powered by green electricity, as well as well-maintained parking facilities, a wide range of shopping, dining, and leisure options, and the high quality of stay at the locations.

Jakub Albert, Head of Property Management, Purchasing and Sustainability (PMPS), Central Europe at URW, says:
“With the expansion of EV charging infrastructure at our locations, we are sending a clear signal for the future of mobility. We are consistently advancing our sustainability plan while placing an even stronger focus on the needs of our customers. We see it as our responsibility to create the right framework conditions for a growing share of electromobility. With E.ON Drive Infrastructure, we have a strong partner at our side who supports us with comprehensive expertise to actively promote sustainable mobility and implement innovative solutions. We are very pleased to achieve this important milestone together at our locations.”

Timo Sillober, CEO of E.ON Drive Infrastructure, says:
“Large-scale shopping and leisure destinations such as those operated by URW are ideal locations for fast-charging infrastructure: the dwell time of visitors fits perfectly with charging—whether it’s a short stop or an extended shopping visit. An E.ON survey from summer 2025 shows that 70 percent of EV drivers expect to be able to charge at shopping centers. With more than 300 new charging points at four locations and 100 percent green electricity, this is exactly what we are enabling, making a concrete contribution together with URW to the mobility transition in everyday life.”
