E.ON Drive is launching City Spot, one of the first charging subscriptions in Denmark where the price of public charging follows the electricity spot price instead of a fixed price per kWh. The subscription costs DKK 229 per month, with a fixed surcharge of DKK 0.25 per kWh on top of the spot price.
Danish EV drivers have so far been tied to charge operators’ fixed kWh prices. With City Spot, the price instead follows the electricity market’s spot price, as many Danes already know it from their electricity contract at home. The subscription applies to all E.ON Drive chargers in Denmark, including the ultra-fast chargers, and customers activate it themselves in the E.ON Drive Public app under Subscriptions.
“EV drivers with their own home charger have been able to shift their charging to the hours when electricity is cheap for years. Public charging has not offered that option to any great extent. That is the imbalance we want to correct,” says Lasse Rosholm, Head of Commercial and Partnerships at E.ON Drive Infrastructure Denmark.
How it works
The price has two parts: a fixed monthly subscription of DKK 229 and a fixed surcharge of DKK 0.25 per kWh on top of the spot price. The rest moves with the market. This means the price falls when electricity is cheap, typically at night, when it is windy, or when the sun is shining. In the cheapest hours, the price has been as low as around DKK 0.68 per kWh.
The price is calculated from the DK2 spot price and Cerius’ tariffs and is the same at all E.ON Drive chargers across the country, regardless of price area and grid company. The amount the customer sees in the app is the total price including taxes, tariffs and VAT.
The same price at city, fast and ultra-fast chargers
The price is the same across E.ON Drive’s Danish charging network, whether the car is charged at an AC charger in a residential area, at a fast charger or at an ultra-fast charger. In practice, customers pay something close to their own electricity price at home, but at public chargers.
The subscription requires neither a home charger nor a particular type of housing. It complements E.ON Drive’s existing subscriptions, and customers can switch in the app.
“We see a group of customers who do all their charging away from home, and who therefore pay more for the same electricity than the neighbour with a carport and a home charger. With City Spot, they get access to the same flexibility: charge when electricity is cheap, and pay accordingly. If, for example, you get home at 4 pm and postpone charging until 10 pm, you save money and relieve the grid at the same time,” says Lasse Rosholm.
