E.ON, in partnership with Voltix and GreenWay, has been selected for a substantial EU funding for the HDV-E project. This landmark initiative aims to deploy the crucial cross-border megawatt charging infrastructure for electric trucks and heavy-duty vehicles (HDVs). The European Union has approved the consortium for a €70.3 million grant.
By autumn 2028, the partners will install approximately 330 high-power charging points, each with a charging capacity of 1 megawatt or more, based on the latest Megawatt Charging System (MCS) technology. The charging points will be located at 55 strategic sites along major European transport routes in Germany, Austria, Denmark, Spain, France, the Netherlands, Sweden, Poland and Hungary. Each site is designed to feature a minimum of four charging points. All charging sites will offer 24/7 public access, open roaming and simple payment options.
The HDV-E project represents one of the largest initiatives currently underway to electrify road freight transport in Europe. Megawatt charging is a decisive technological leap: it enables battery-electric trucks to match diesel vehicles in range, charging times and cost efficiency – a key step toward a climate-friendly transformation of the transport sector. With this network, HDV-E will significantly contribute to achieving European climate targets and strengthening Europe’s competitiveness in transport.
Timo Sillober, CEO of E.ON Drive Infrastructure: “Only with charging power in the megawatt range can e-trucks deliver what diesel trucks do today. With HDV-E, we are building the infrastructure that makes this possible. This is how climate goals become reality on Europe’s roads.”
Louis Du Pasquier, Managing Director of Voltix, a VINCI Concessions company: “The question is no longer if decarbonized trucks will be electric in Europe, but when. The deployment of a reliable network of high-power charging stations dedicated to trucks on main European roads is one of the necessary keys to accelerate the transition to electric trucks. The HDV-E project will contribute significantly to release this constraint.”
Peter Badik, founder and Chairman of the GreenWay Board: “Bringing megawatt and ultra-fast charging to electric heavy-duty vehicles is a major step toward a cleaner transport system. At GreenWay, we’re thrilled to be working on this next stage of e-mobility and to support logistics partners throughout our region as they move toward long distance zero-emission operations.”
Co-financing by the European Union
The project has been selected for co-financing under the Alternative Fuel Infrastructure Facility (AFIF). AFIF is part of the EU’s Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) and is managed by the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA).
About E.ON Drive Infrastructure
Through its subsidiary E.ON Drive Infrastructure, E.ON builds, owns and operates public charging networks for all types of electric vehicles. The goal is to make charging easily accessible everywhere in Europe. Today, E.ON Drive Infrastructure already operates more than 8,000 public charging points in eleven European countries and continues to expand its network. www.edri.com
About Voltix
Voltix, a VINCI Concessions company, aims to decarbonize road freight transport by accelerating and supporting the transition of heavy goods vehicles to electric power. To achieve this, Voltix is developing public charging stations dedicated to heavy goods vehicles. Voltix was also laureate in February 2025 of the first call of the European CEF-AFIF funding to deploy megawatt charging stations for electric trucks in France. www.voltix-charging.com
