E.ON wins major Italian motorway charging tender

E.ON Drive Infrastructure Italy has been selected among the awardees of the recent tender launched by Autostrade per l'Italia (ASPI), Italy's largest motorway operator. This result further strengthens the company’s commitment to expanding Italy’s high‑power charging network and confirms the robustness of its technical and strategic proposal.

The project will deliver 104 ultra-fast charge points across 18 motorway service areas along Italy's busiest East-West and North-South corridors, including the A4 (Turin–Trieste) and A14 (Bologna–Taranto) motorways. All sites are planned to be operational by the end of 2026, subject to permitting and grid connection timelines.

Energy hubs with integrated sustainability

Each charging site is designed as an individual energy hub, combining ultra-fast charging with on-site renewable energy generation and storage. The stations feature four to eight charge points equipped with Alpitronic HYC400 ultra-fast chargers delivering up to 400 kW of charging power. This enables drivers to add 200+ km of range in 15–25 minutes during a typical rest stop.

All sites integrate rooftop photovoltaic arrays and a battery energy storage system (BESS). The batteries maximize the usage of solar energy and enable peak-shaving to reduce grid impact during high-usage periods while ensuring stable charging power around the clock. In addition to on‑site solar, all electricity supplied by the grid is certified 100% renewable, ensuring that every charging session is fully powered by green energy. A centralized Energy Management System coordinates solar generation, battery storage, charging loads and grid power for optimal efficiency.

Barrier-free, user-friendly charging

The stations are designed to meet the EU's Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulation (AFIR) requirements, which mandate easy payment options and transparent pricing. All E.ON sites will offer ad-hoc payment via credit or debit card with no app or subscription required and prices will be displayed clearly on LED screens before charging begins. Moreover, all sites support full e‑roaming integration, allowing drivers to charge seamlessly using their preferred mobility service provider (MSP) apps across a wide network of interoperable partners.

Driver amenities include weather-protected canopies, comfortable waiting areas with seating, real-time LED displays showing pricing and stall availability, and radar-based parking sensors. All stations meet accessibility standards with barrier-free layouts, 3.2 m minimum stall width for wheelchair access, and 24/7 remote assistance.

Accelerating Italy's EV transition

The ASPI tender is part of a broader program to install charging infrastructure across 60 motorway service areas nationwide, meeting AFIR's requirement for fast charging every 60 km on the trans-European transport network. ASPI operates approximately 3,000 km of Italy's motorway network, making its charging rollout strategically significant for long-distance electric vehicle adoption.

Michele De Gaspari, Business Manager of E.ON Drive Infrastructure Italy: " Securing this highly competitive tender demonstrates both our technical strength and our commitment to accelerating Italy's electric mobility transition. These 18 charging hubs will provide reliable, user-friendly, ultra-fast charging on some of Europe's most important transport corridors. By integrating solar and battery storage at every site, we're not just building charging infrastructure - we're creating sustainable energy ecosystems that support the grid while serving drivers."

Strategic expansion in Southern Europe

The ASPI award significantly expands E.ON's overall presence in Italy, supporting the rapid expansion of its national charging network. The new infrastructure complements E.ON Drive Infrastructure's broader European charging network, which includes more than 8,800 public charge points across 11 countries. The Italian motorway sites are strategically positioned to connect North and South Italy along the Adriatic corridor, extending E.ON's charging network from the Nordic countries all the way down to Southern Europe and creating seamless long-distance travel routes for electric vehicle drivers across the continent.
